The Dangers of Diet Pills

Obesity is something that the government has been trying to solve for many years now. Though it is not considered a disease, it is a condition that could lead to other life-threatening health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Obviously, a lot of obese find it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet and instead they search for quick and easy ways to try to lose fat. It is the quick fix that drives people to seek out pills and supplements to help them in their quest for fat loss.

What is a diet pill?

A diet pill is a drug that promises to reduce or control weight by suppressing appetite, speeding up metabolism and the absorption of calories. These supplements are intended to help people who have weight problems, but don’t want to follow an extensive diet plan nor want to hit the gym. Some manufacturers of diet pills market their products as “all-natural”, which basically means that all ingredients used in the formulation of the supplement are available in nature. The other type of diet pills contains synthetic or man-made component added in its formulation. And they claim the synthetic component of their diet pills make their product more effective than other kinds of weight loss supplements. But the questions is, are they safe?

The dangers of man-made diet pills

1. Habit forming

Taking diet pills can lead to dependence if people are not careful. When people who are taking diet pills are not properly advised, they might think that taking more than what is necessary could result to better and faster results. But this is not the case. These pills should be taken only as instructed, nothing more or less. Because diet pills may contain synthetic chemicals, taking too many could only lead to substance abuse.

2. Possible Side Effects

Natural diet pills contain ingredients extracted from different kinds of plants and fruits. These extracts are processed in laboratories until they are reduced into pill form. Because the components used in the formulation of the pill are completely natural, the end product is ok for human consumption. This is not the case with man-made diet pills though. While there may be extracts taken from fruits and plants, synthetic chemicals are also added to mix. One of the dangers of diet pills is that they can inhibit the absorption of fats which causes gastrointestinal side effects, such as oily spotting, flatus with discharge, fecal urgency, fatty/oily stool, oily evacuation, increased defecation, and fecal incontinence. Other gastrointestinal diet pill side effects may include: abdominal pain, nausea, infectious diarrhea, and rectal pain.

Another one of the dangers of diet pills that inhibit the absorption of fats cause a deficiency in vitamins A, D, E, K, and Beta-carotenes.

Other diet pills work by norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine reuptake inhibition. One of these diet pill side effects is that it is known to substantially increase blood pressure in some patients. Serious dangers of diet pills of this nature can arise in those patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Other diet pill side effects from this type include: headache, back pain, abdominal pain, hypertension, palpitation, anorexia, constipation, nausea, thirst, joint disorder, insomnia, dizziness, anxiety, depression, acne and rashes.

3. Lack of Safety Regulations

The government doesn’t exercise strict regulation when it comes to diet pills. This may be surprising to some but this is the truth. The manufacturer of diet supplements only has to submit a certification of the supposed safety and effectiveness of the product. The FDA doesn’t go to great lengths to verify if these claims are in fact completely true. Once FDA has not found irregularity in the certification submitted by a manufacturer, then they would allow the distribution of the supplement in the market. In essence, the responsibility of assuring the quality of the product rests solely on the manufacturers.
