A Healthy, Nutritious Breakie

Breakfast has never been my favourite meals and in fact, until a few years ago, I used to skip it completely. I now realise how important breakfast is. The food you eat in the morning, fuels your body for the day, so it is vital that you provide your body with the best nutrients possible. The food you eat in the morning has to sustain you throughout the morning, until you eat again. I have included in this article, the ingredients I use for a breakfast that has become a recent favourite. It is healthy, nutritious and packed full of energy, a prefect start to the day. Remember however that whatever meal you eat in the morning, pair this with lots of water. During the night the body becomes dehydrated and rehydrating in the morning is very important.

• Wholemeal quick oats

• Natural organic yoghurt (there are many brands out there, so find your favourite)

• 4-5 blueberries/raisins

• Small handful of raw, unsalted nuts (cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, pepitas, walnuts)

• Light fresh milk

• (Organic honey)

Place a handful of wholemeal quick oats in a bowl. Top with 2-3 heaped tablespoons of organic yogurt. Sprinkle on a small handful of the mixed raw nuts and blueberries. The blueberries are great anti-oxidants and provide a bit of sweetness. If you have never eaten natural yogurt by itself before, it can be a little tart. If I don’t have blueberries, I sometimes use raisins or drizzle half a teaspoon on honey over the top. If you are watching your sugar intake, eliminate the honey and raisins completely. Because of the high levels of sugars in most foods, our bodies are conditioned to crave sugar. At first the natural yoghurt will taste quite bitter, but you will quickly get used to it. Pour over the milk and enjoy! If you are lactose intolerant, substitute the fresh milk with lactose free milk. Soy and rice milk are also nice alternates.
